For the girls (& boys) who come up to me after...
No, thank YOU for giving my words enough breath & energy to survive another moment on stage. For giving me more than enough reason to keep doing what I do. Peace & love through whatever may come your way.
(And since some of y’all have asked, I’m available for bookings at your university events/shows: jon@theprojectmgmt.com. And if you have any other questions, hit me up here:...

To never be complacent...
because, good or bad, things are always changing.
If I’m comfortable, I know that at one point, I will be uncomfortable. If I’m unhappy, I know that at one point, I will smile again.
To never find myself wanting to stay in one place, because my mind, body and soul will always wish to travel beyond what others believe are my limits. To never wish for someone else’s life, because...

To zombie or not to zombie? (Why even ask.)
6:45 a.m. I wake up for work, rubbing my eyes, trying my best not to hit “dismiss” on my phone alarm. I get up about ten minutes later, and walk to the bathroom to brush my teeth. I look in the mirror and I look like hell. I get over it. I put on my gray work slacks, find a top that I can stand wearing for eight hours, knowing that it’ll keep me comfortable, not itchy and annoyed. (Read more...

"His Room. My Room." (for grandpa)
When my grandfather passed away, I moved into his old room. It had the best sunlight in the house. “Very cheery,” my mom would say. After his wake, family friends visited our house to pray and show their condolences. Half serious and half playful, they asked me, “You’re going to sleep in your grandpa’s room? Aren’t you afraid?” I answered them politely, “No. (read more here…)

Untitled
I found this in my “drafts” — untitled & unfinished(?). I’m pretty sure it’s from a couple years ago, but I always get a kick out of reading things I’ve written in the past. It’s obviously pretty rough. All emotion, very little fine tuning. At the time, I was at odds with what “dating” really meant to me as a female. Honestly, I’m not...

My motto is: Chicago, bitch.
- Hahaha I’m a fan of Drake’s, but I’m also a Chi native. Common KILLED this remix, along w/ Drake’s manhood. Lol sorry.
EDIT: Just a note: I feel a lot of the mainstream hip hop artists nowadays are afraid of “beef.” Like the industry has strayed so far away from its roots, the idea of “battling” is no longer a part of the game. I’m not...

Sometimes I enjoy being at a loss for words...
Especially about love. And that’s coming from a writer.
(Silence, my thoughts, and a fuzzy feeling inside. That’s all… for now.)

Derrick Rose, Flawless Victory.
Oh, by the way, one of my favorite NBA sites (HoopSpeak.com) is now on tumblr. It’s not the full blow, word-heavy HoopSpeak, but it is the brilliantly illustrated one, so, follow them.

hoopspeak:
Rose drove past Teague and scored over the Hawks’ Josh Smith with 9.9 seconds left in the game to put the Bulls up 74-73.

Midnight talks with my mom. Everything I’ve ever written has somehow been influenced by my mom. From her little adages, to her unique (sometimes vulgar) sense of humor. Every inspirational poem, every conceptual song, even my sarcasm — everything I write has a little touch of “Norma” in it. Even something as simple as what she told me today. How I shouldn’t be...

Graduation Plans
(Originally written on April 27, 2009 — 2 weeks before my college graduation.)
For the past month, people have been asking me the same question: “So… what are your plans after you graduate?” And for the past month, I’ve been giving the same answer: “I don’t know.” I usually throw public relations and free lance writing in somewhere, but the general...

I see every step back as a step forward towards...
Setbacks are personal reminders of how much you have to want it, whatever “it” may be. They urge you not to get too comfortable with life. To never be complacent with what you have, but instead, to work hard for what you know you deserve. Humility is never to be mistaken for insecurity or self-doubt. It is self-growth. A chance to get in touch with the part of you that says, “I...
